The Sailendra dynasty built the largest Buddhist relic in the world between 780-840 AD. The Sailendra dynasty was the ruling dynasty of the time. This relic is built as a place of worship of Buddha and place of pilgrimage. This place contains guidance for people to abstain from the lust of the world and to enlightenment and wisdom according to the Buddha. This legacy was discovered by British troops in 1814 under the leadership of Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles. The temple area was completely cleaned in 1835. Borobudur temple is built in a Mandala style that reflects the universe in Buddhist belief. The structure of this building is boxed with four entrances and a circular center point. When viewed from the outside to the inside is divided into two parts of the world of nature is divided into three zones on the outside, and the nature of Nirvana in the central part.

 Pawon temple

Pawon temple is located right on the axis of the line that connects Mendut Temple and Borobudur Temple. A rectangular temple with a terraced roof and a cubicle inside. The location of Pawon temple is quite hidden, and surrounded by people's houses. Composed of volcanic rocks with a blend of ancient Javanese and Indian Hindu style, as well as the similarity of ornamental patterns with Mendut and Borobudur temples, experts agree that these three temples were built in the same century.

Another historical glory can be enjoyed at Mendut Temple, located about 3 km east of Borobudur Temple. Mendut Temple is a Buddhist temple built by King Indra from Wangsa Syailendra. Mendut Temple hinges become a throne for a large Buddha statue. The rectangular-shaped temple with a storied roof decorated with small stupas was built earlier than Pawon and Borobudur temples located in a straight line.

How to get to Borobudur from Yogyakarta

Private Vehicle from Yogyakarta

The main road to Borobudur from Yogyakarta is through Jalan Magelang. To go to Borobudur temple move north towards the City of Magelang. After about 40 km, you will meet the intersection Palbapang (Mungkid - Magelang), take the left. Distance Palbapang to Borobudur about 10 km. Mendut temple is about 4.5 km.
